The choice of a bi-colour goes back to an Anglo-Arab agreement in the nineteenth century. At the time the states of the Persian Gulf were required to use a red flag with a white border. Red was the colour of the Kharajite Muslims and was the colour of many flags flown by Persian Gulf states. Many vessels flying such flags were involved in piracy and it was therefore decreed that any vessel flying such a flag would be assumed to be a pirate unless their flag bore white in addition to red.

The aquamarine and yellow stripes represent the sand and the sea that surrounds the archipelago. The black is said to represent the vigour and force of a united people. The triangle indicates the enterprise and determination of the Bahamian people to develop the rich resources of land and sea.
