The flag of Uruguay was adopted in 1830. Uruguay's 19th century history was dominated by a struggle to remain independent of both Brazil and Argentina following its independence from Spain. The designers of the flag appear to have been inspired by the colours of the Argentine flag, and the design of the Stars and Stripes, both of these elements being incorporated.
The Uruguayan flag has 9 alternating stripes of blue and white, representing the nine original regions of Uruguay. The canton contains the Sun Of May, a revolutionary symbol common in South America. Uruguay's original emblem was the flag of Jose Artigas, the national hero who first attempted to free the country of Spanish rule; this flag was a blue-white-blue tri-band with a red diagonal stripe running from the top of the hoist to the foot of the fly.Contact us to purchase
