Turkmenistan Flag

Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. The flag of Turkmenistan was adopted shortly after independence. The crescent moon on a green field immediately identifies Turkmenistan as being Islamic. The red band in the hoist contains a detailed depiction of a Turkistani carpet.

The five different designs on the carpet represent the five main tribes of the republic. This symbolism is carried over to the five stars with their five points. They are also said to stand for the five physical senses, and the five states of matter, solid, liquid, gaseous, crystalline and plasma. In 1997, the olive branches from the UN flag were added to symbolize Turkmenistan's status as a neutral country, and to signify the country's wish for peace and international cooperation.
