The archipelago of "The Friendly Islands" was united into a Polynesian kingdom in 1845. It became a constitutional monarchy in 1875 and a British protectorate in 1900. Tonga acquired its independence in 1970 and became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. It remains the only monarchy in the Pacific. The Flag reflects the deep-rooted Christian belief of the people of Tonga.
The flag was declared inalterable at it's inception in the first national constitution in 1875 at the express wish of King Taufa'ahau Tupou George I who wished the flag to reflect his own- and he hoped his subject's- devotion to Christianity. The cross is said to remind the people that they owe their salvation to the sacrifice made by Jesus on the cross, the red represents the blood shed by Jesus and the white symbolizes purity.BUY NOW
