Swaziland Flag

Swaziland became independent on September 1968 and adopted a new flag, the field of which is red with horizontal blue stripes at top and bottom, divided from the red by thin gold stripes. In the center is a native ox hide shield with two spears and a Zulu fighting stick. The plumes of feathers on the shield and spears traditionally regarded as royal ornaments.

It was based on the flag, granted by King Sobhuza II to the Emasotsha-regiment of the Swazi Pioneer Corp in 1941 during the time that Swaziland was still under British control. The flag was, in slightly different form, hoisted on 25 Apr 1967, when the British Union flag was hauled down. The blood red color is the symbol of past struggles; yellow points at prosperity by the richness in minerals; blue is the color of peace.
