Independence from the Netherlands was granted in 1975, along with the adoption of the new flag. Five years later the civilian government was replaced by a military regime that soon declared a socialist republic. It continued to rule through a succession of nominally civilian administrations until 1987, when international pressure finally brought about a democratic election.
The dominant colours of red, green and white represent the three main political groupings and also are said to have symbolic meaning as well: red stands for progress in the struggle for a better life and renewal, white stands for purity, justice and freedom and green represents fertility.
