Somalia was formed by the union of British Somaliland and Italian Somalia. The new state gained full independence under the auspices of the United Nations in 1960. The present flag of Somalia was adopted in 1954 by the southern or Italian part of the country and is based on the colours of the UN flag. On the establishment of the unified state in 1960, it was adopted as the national flag.
The blue of the flag is sometimes said to represent the colour of the sky. The five-pointed star is a symbol of liberty and African freedom, the five points are said to represent the five divisions into which history, geography and politics had separated the Somali people, the five areas in which the Somalis live; Somaliland, the former Italian Somalia, the territory of the Afars and Issas (Djibouti), and parts of Ethiopia and Kenya.Contact us to purchase
