The UK established a protectorate over the Solomon Islands in the 1890s. Some of the fiercest fighting of World War II occurred on these islands. Self-government was achieved in 1976 and independence two years later. The flag, which resulted from a design competition, was granted by HRH Queen Elizabeth II in 1977, in anticipation of independence the following year.
The Yellow symbolizes sunshine, the blue symbolizes water and the sea and green represents the land. The five stars represent the five districts into which the islands were originally divided, and not as has been suggested the main islands, surrounded by the blue of the ocean. These districts are, Eastern district, Western district, Malaita district, Central district and Eastern Outer islands.BUY NOW
