In 1960, Mali and Senegal both became independent from France and formed a brief association. However this was dissolved shortly after, and Mali retained the original flag of the association, which differs from the current Senegal flag only in the device in the center of the yellow band, the Mali flag retained the stick-figure and Senegal substituted this with a five pointed star.
The design of the flag was based on that of the French tri-colour with the colours of French flag substituted with those of Pan-Africa, green, yellow and red. The five-pointed star is said to represent African Freedom, the opening of the country to the five continents, or unity and hope. The green of the flag is alternatively said to represent an expression of hope for undisturbed progress, the red to represent the martyrs and the common struggle of the African nations for independence and the yellow, the verdant land and wealth through collective labour.Contact us to purchase
