The Romanian tri-colour first emerged in 1848, a year of upheaval and revolution in Europe, to express the desire for freedom of the Moldovia and Wallachia provinces from the Ottoman Empire. Its original design, a horizontal red-yellow-blue tri-colour, like many other new flags that appeared at the time, based on the revolutionary French tri-colour.
The flag was accepted in 1859 when the two principalities united and two years later the new country took the name of Romania. In 1867, the order of the colours were reversed and changed to vertical to more closely resemble the French tri-colour. From this time, until the downfall of the repressive regime of Nicolae Ceaucescu, the flag the flag carried an emblem in the central yellow band, first a royalist, and then communist, but since the overthrow of communism, the flag has been plain, and is Identical to the flag of Chad.Contact us to purchase
