A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century; it was known as Siam until 1939. Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. The flag used until 1916 comprised a white elephant on a red field, the elephant being the national emblem.

This was changed to a simpler flag, retaining the white colour of the elephant in the form of stripes in 1916, and in 1917 the blue stripe was added as an expression of solidarity with the allied forces with whom Thailand fought in World War 1, the flags of the UK, French, Russia and USA all containing red, white and blue. The red is said to represent the lifeblood of the people, white to represent the purity of Buddhism, the national religion, and blue to represent the monarchy.
