Shortly after independence, Tanganyika (independence gained in 1961) and Zanzibar (independence gained in 1963) merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. The flag combines elements from the flags of both former nations. The flag of Tanganyika was a green-black-green horizontal tri-colour with yellow fimbriations on the green band. The flag of Zanzibar was a blue-black-green horizontal tri-colour.

The new flag combined the common colours, and added the blue from the Zanzibar flag, the whole arranged in a diagonal pattern to give both former states equal status. The blue is said to represent the sea (which separates Tanganyika from Zanzibar), black represents the people, green represents agriculture and the yellow [veins] represent the nations mineral wealth.

Foxflags flags are made of the highest quality bunting material for outdoor use and cannot be compared to cheaper alternatives available online.
