Until 1903, Panama was a province of Colombia. Perhaps as a consequence of the Colombians' refusal to allow the United States to build a canal linking the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans through the isthmus, and the consequent independence of Panama, the flag is said to pay tribute to the Stars and Stripes, although the colours and stars are said to have alternate meanings.
The flag was designed by the son of the first president, Manuel Amador Guerrero. The blue and red quarters are said to represent the two main political parties in Panama, the Conservatives, and the Liberals, the equal size of each colour said to signify hope that each party would have equal opportunity to lead the country. The white is said to symbolize peace. The red star is said to represent authority and the rule of law, while the blue star is said to represent civic loyalty and public honesty.Contact us to purchase
