Niue Flag

The flag of Niue is based upon the flag of New Zealand, of whom Niue has been an autonomous dependency since 1974. The flag was adopted in 1975. The yellow field is said to represent the bright sunshine of Niue and the warmth of mutual friendship between Niue and the country and people of New Zealand.

The four five-pointed stars of the Southern Cross, appearing in the fly of the New Zealand flag, have been moved to the canton and appear in the arms of the St George cross in the Union Jack. The single large star in the middle of the Jack is said to represent Niue, the placement of this star on a blue disc said to symbolize the remoteness of Niue in the Pacific Ocean.
