Nigeria was first a British protectorate in the 19th century and then a British colony until 1960 when the flag of the new nation was adopted. Modern Nigeria was born in 1914 when the regions of Northern and Southern Nigeria combined. Nigeria gained independence in 1960 and became a member of the Commonwealth.
The flag was selected from entrants in a design competition for which almost 3000 designs were submitted, the winner being a simple design by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi. The green bands are said to stand for agriculture, the country's chief source of income, the white to represent peace and unity. The flag's colours are also said to have an alternative meaning, that the green represents Nigeria, with the white band being the River Niger running through the green bands of forest.Contact us to purchase
