Mauritania is an Islamic republic in Northwestern Africa, and is a natural meeting point for the Arab culture of the north and the African culture of the south. The Islamic allegiances of Mauritania are obvious in the colours and symbols used on the flag, the green being the colour of Islam along with the symbolism of the crescent and the five pointed star.
Mauritania was originally a part of French West Africa and gained autonomy within the French community in 1958, remaining loyal to France upon attaining full independence in 1960. The current flag was adopted in 1958. The colours, apart from representing Islam are also said to have other meanings, the green is said to represent hope for a bright future and well being, and the yellow is said to represent the Sahara Desert.Contact us to purchase
