The Maldives are a coral atoll in the Indian Ocean comprising some 1000 islands, the local name for the group being the Thousand Islands. The Islands, which had been a British Protectorate since 1887, became independent in 1965 and the present design was adopted in that year. Up until that time the flag of the Maldives had a plain red field.
The colours of the current flag are representative of the Arabic origins of the Islands (red), and the colours and symbols of Islam (green rectangle and white cross). The red is also said to represent the sacrifice of the heroes of the independence struggle, and the green is said to represent progress and prosperity.Contact us to purchase
