The federation of Malaysia, formed in 1963, originally consisted of the 11 states of the Federation of Malaya, Singapore and the northern Borneo states of Sarawak and Sabah. The flag adopted upon federation was based on the former Malayan flag, which had 11 stripes and an 11 pointed star, which was altered to have 14 stripes and a 14 pointed star, both to recognise the 14 states that had joined together to form Malaysia.
Singapore seceded in 1965, however the flag remained unchanged, the 14th stripe and point then said to represent Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur. The star and crescent are Islamic symbols. The red and white colours are traditional colours throughout Southeast Asia. The blue is recognition of Malaysia's former ties to Britain and the yellow is said to represent those states that are Sultanates.BUY NOW
