The national flag of Malawi was officially hoisted on 6th July 1964. Previously, Malawi was known as Nyasaland, and was under the control of Great Britain. The primary driving force for independence was The Malawi Congress Party, which took power when its aim was achieved. In 1966, Malawi became a one party Republic with Hastings Banda declared President for life in 1971.
The current flag is similar to the flag used by the Malawi Congress Party from 1953; however, a rising sun was added to the black band to give the flag now in use. The black is said to represent the African people, the red symbolizes the blood of those who fought and died for independence, the green symbolizes the country's fertility. The sun was added to symbolize a new era for the whole African continent and the dawn of hope.Contact us to purchase
