International recognition of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia's independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 was delayed by the objections raised by Greece to the use of what they considered Hellenic names and symbols. Greece finally lifted its trade blockade in 1995, and the two countries agreed to normalize relations.
Among the objections raised by Greece were the use of the Star of Vergina on the national flag, and the use of the name Macedonia which is also the name of a Greek province. This was alleviated by changing the flag to the current flag, and adopting the name Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The present flag displays a yellow sun with eight rays instead of the 16 rays of the former flag's Star of Vergina.Contact us to purchase
