Colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Macao was the first European settlement in the Far East. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and Portugal on 13th April 1987, Macao became the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 20th December 1999.
Under China's "one country, two systems" formula, Macao has been promised freedom from China's socialist economic system, and will enjoy high degree of autonomy in all things except foreign and defense affairs. The flag was adopted in 1993, but was not in use until the hand-over in December 1999. The five stars on the flag are taken from the Chinese flag and recall that Macao is an inseparable part of China. The stylized Lotus leaf represents the people, its three petals representing the three islands of Macao. The bridge and the waves are symbolic of the natural environment surrounding Macao.Contact us to purchase
