Libya is the only country in the world to have a monochromatic (one-colour) flag. In 1969, following a coup, the Libyan leader, Muammar Qadaffi, instituted a new flag, with horizontal red-white-black stripes similar to the flag of Egypt. In 1971 Libya, Egypt and Syria formed the Federation of Arab Republics. All three countries flew the same flag, which they hoped would be the banner for a unified Arab state.
In 1977 President Anwar of Egypt visited Israel to make plans for a peace treaty. Qadaffi felt that the Arab cause had been betrayed by this act and angrily rejected the flag then in use. It was replaced by the current flag, in plain green. The colour green is the colour of Islam, and its use on the flag symbolizes the Libyan devotion to Islam. Green was also intended to symbolize the 'Green Revolution' proclaimed by Qadaffi, an effort to increase the food production of Libya.Contact us to purchase
