In 1954, Laos achieved full independence from France, but remained a constitutional monarchy, as it had been since 1947. At the time of independence, Laos was in the grip of a vicious civil war between the existing government, funded by the USA, and assisted by huge numbers of mercenaries from neighbouring Thailand, and the communist led and Vietnamese supported Neo Lao Istala (Laotian Patriotic Front or Pathet Lao).
After a failed attempt at compromise government in 1974, the Pathet Lao took control in 1975 and declared the Peoples Democratic Republic of Laos. The flag adopted was identical to the flag of the Pathet Lao from1945. The white disk represents the moon, symbolizing justice and the promise of the future, the blue represents the Mekong River symbolizing the peoples wellbeing, and red symbolizing the blood spilt by the Lao people in defence of their Fatherland.Contact us to purchase
