The world's largest archipelago, Indonesia achieved independence from the Netherlands in 1949. The national flag dates from the initial declaration of independence made four years earlier in 1945. Before that, from about 1924, the flag had been used by freedom fighters in their struggle against the Dutch, but the original use of the colours can be traced to the 13th century.
Identical to the much more venerable flag of Monaco, except in dimension, the flag is known in Indonesia as Sang Dwiwarna (exalted bi-colour). The colours are said to symbolize a living person. The red is said to represent the body and physical life, the white to represent the soul and spiritual life. Other interpretations of the colours have the red symbolizing gallantry and freedom, and the white symbolizing purity and justice.BUY NOW
