Part of Spain's vast empire in the New World, Honduras became an independent nation in 1821. Along with the other nations which formed the Central American Federation (CAF) or United Provinces of Central America: Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Guatemala, Honduras has adopted a flag based on the flag used by the CAF from 1821 until its break-up in 1838.
The present flag has been in use since 1866 and was officially adopted in 1949. The blue bands represent both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The white symbolizes peace and purity. The five stars on the white band represent the five former nations of the CAF, and the hope that the five nations will one day reform the association of the early to mid 19th century. On the state flag the stars are arranged in an arc to accommodate the state arms.Contact us to purchase
