The flag of Guyana was adopted in 1966; the year Guyana achieved independence from Britain. The flag was designed by Dr Whitney Smith, director of the Flag Research Centre of Winchester, Massachusetts. The green is to represent the green forests and fields that cover 90% of Guyana.
The red triangle was chosen to represent zeal and sacrifice, which are part of the nation building process the Guyanese people are striving towards, the triangle's black border is for endurance, the yellow arrowhead was chosen to represent progress and the nations mineral wealth.
