Guinea Flag

The flag of Guinea, introduced a few weeks after independence in 1958, is another example of the influence of the French tri-colour in African flags. It uses the Pan-African colours, although not in this case taken from the flag of Ethiopia, but copied from the flag of Ghana, with whom Guinea originally intended to unite.

The colours are said to reflect the national motto 'Work, Justice, Solidarity': red is the colour of blood and reflects the spirit of sacrifice and hard work (Work), yellow is the colour of the gold of Guinea and the African sun, the source of energy, generosity and equality as it shines on all equally (Justice), green is the colour of the vegetation, agriculture, the productivity of the peasants and the spirit of solidarity in collective enterprises (Solidarity).
