The current flag of Guatemala was first introduced in 1871. It is derived from the flag used by the Central American Federation (or United Provinces of Central America), established in 1821 when Spanish colonial dominion ended, which was a simple blue-white-blue tri-band. The colours and their arrangement reflect Guatemala's geographical situation, with the waters of the Pacific on one side, and the Caribbean on the other.
The choice of the flag is also said to represent Guatemala's hope that the association of states that formed the federation can one day be revived. The main device of the Emblem is the 'Quetzal' the traditional bird of freedom. The rifles symbolize the will of the people to defend freedom, the swords stand for justice and sovereignty, and the wreath is a symbol of victory. The inscription on the scroll is the date when Central America broke from Spain.Contact us to purchase
