The German national colours are those of the arms, which are the same as the arms of the Holy Roman Empire, black for the eagle, red for its claws and gold for the golden shield. Upon reunification in 1990 to form the new Federal Republic of Germany, the former West Germany and East Germany (German Democratic Republic) chose to retain not only the West German name, but also its national flag.
The colours featured in the uniform of the Lützow Free Corps, or Black Jäger volunteers (black greatcoats, red facings and gold buttons), during the war of liberation in 1813-15, when the trend towards the unification of Germany was growing. The black-red-gold tri-colour became the national flag of the German federation in 1848. This was replaced by a black-white-red tri-colour in 1867, which was used until 1919 and again in 1933-35.BUY NOW
