Georgia has been a unitary state since 1991, following the dissolution of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The national flag first came into use when Georgia proclaimed its independence in 1917. It was resurrected upon the breakup of the Soviet Union. The dark red colour (Dogwood red) is regarded as the national colour. The black and white stripes stand for the country's tragic past and hopes for the future.
Georgia is the land of the legendary "Golden Fleece" sought by Jason. In its history it has been invaded and/or ruled by the Romans, the Persians, the Arabs, the Tatars, the Persians once again and the Turks until 1801, when Georgia was annexed by Russia. A further attempt at independence, after the Russian revolution, was crushed in 1921. The Soviet Dictator, Josef Stalin (1879-1953) was Georgian.Contact us to purchase
