The French tri-colour was used for the first time in 1794 during the French revolution. Along with the Stars and Stripes of the USA, and the Union flag of Great Britain, it is one of the most recognisable flags in the world. It is said to be one of the most important flags in history because its message of liberty was an inspiration to many countries in the world.
France was also a major colonial power in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is believed that the colours derive from the colours of Paris, blue and red, to which was added the white of the House of Bourbon. However, these colours are said to go back further in history, St Martins cloak was blue, white was associated with Joan of Arc, and the oriflamme of St Denis was red, as was the imperial flag of Charlemagne. There have been several changes to the flag, but the current version has been in use since 1946.BUY NOW
