The Falkland Islands are situated about four hundred miles northeast of Cape Horn. The Falklands are a British colony, together with South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, although they are claimed by Argentina where they are known as Islas Malvinas. The blue ensign of Britain is used, with a shield (which dates from 1948) on a white disc.
The shield contains a ram standing on tussock grass, denoting the fact that wool is the principal product of the island. The wavy blue and white lines are to represent the sea, and the ship is the Desire, the ship used by English navigator John Davis when he discovered the islands in 1592. Beneath the shield is a scroll bearing the motto "Desire the Right", said to derive from the name of Davis' ship. Before 1948, the shield bore a bull, but this was replaced by the sheep to reflect the islands' economic resources.Contact us to purchase
