Eritrea was awarded to Ethiopia in 1952 as part of a federation. Ethiopia's annexation of Eritrea as a province 10 years later sparked a 30 year struggle for independence that ended in 1991 with Eritrean rebels defeating government forces. Independence was overwhelmingly approved in a 1993 referendum. A border war erupted in 1998, which to this date (Oct 2001) remains unresolved.
The basic design of the flag is identical to the flag of the Eritrean Peoples Liberation Front. The olive wreath with an upright branch in the centre is taken from the flag used by Eritrea from 1952 until 1959 when Eritrea was absorbed by Ethiopia. The 1952-59 flag was used after 1959 as a "Flag of Liberation" until 1993,when independence was finally achieved. We have been unable to ascertain the symbolism of the colours, but the olive wreath and branch almost certainly signify peace.Contact us to purchase
