The Czechoslovakian nation was formed in 1918 from the former Austrian possessions of Bohemia, Moravia and part of Silesia. Ruthenia was added in 1920, but was lost to the Russians during World War 2. In 1948, communism triumphed, and in 1949, the nation's two separate republics, Slovakia to the east and the Czech Socialist Republic to the west were formed.
White and red are the traditional colours of Bohemia. The white and red of the Bohemian coat of arms, which date back to the early 12th century, were adopted during the revolutionary movements of the 19th century. The first Czech flag appeared during World War 1and in 1918 became the first national flag of Czechoslovakia. Blue is one of the colours of Slovakia, along with white and red, and became part of the new flag in 1920. The blue was added in the form of a triangle, smaller than the current one, to represent the Slav element of the population.Contact us to purchase
