Croatiaivoire Flag (Ivory Coast)

Croatia seceded from Yugoslavia in 1991at the end of a period of civil war that was short, but on occasion, extremely brutal. Following the example of other Slavic nations, the Croats, in 1848, adopted a red-white-blue horizontal tri-colour. When Croatia proclaimed independence in 1941, the arms, which were a shield of red and white checks, were placed in the centre of the tri-colour and the badge of Ustasha in the Canton.

Under communist rule, the Croat tri-colour was charged with a red star. The crown above the present state arms is composed of shields with the historic arms of Croatia (gold star above silver crescent), Dubrovnik (2 red stripes on a blue field), Dalmatia (3 golden lion's heads), Istria (golden goat with red horns and hooves) and Slavonica (golden star above red stripe, fimbriated silver, and charged with a black marten).
