Colombia Flag

The similarity between the flag of Colombia, and those of Venezuela and Ecuador are striking and not by accident. These countries along with Panama were once the vast Spanish territory of New Granada, which was colonized in the 16th century. Simon Bolivar, the liberator, secured the independence of the territory in 1819-21, and it was named Greater Colombia.

However, Ecuador and Venezuela seceded in 1830 (Panama became independent in 1903). The yellow, blue and red colours were those adopted by the Venezuelan freedom fighter Francisco de Miranda to convey the message that the nation (Yellow) was separated by the sea (Blue) from Spain (Red). The red is also said to symbolize the blood spilt in attaining that freedom. There are several other explanations of the symbolism of the colours.
