The Federal Republic of Cameroon came into being in 1961 when French Cameroun and the former British Cameroons were united. The 1961-72 flag of Cameroon was a vertical tri-colour of green-red-yellow with two yellow stars on the red. It was adopted when the former British territory of South Cameroon voted to join French Cameroun which became independent in 1957.
The 2 stars signified the two territories. In 1972 Cameroon became a unitary state and the second star was subsequently dropped from the flag. Cameroon was the second modern African state (after Ghana) to accept the pan-African colours of green-red-yellow. The colours also have another interpretation. The green is said to represent hope, and the luxuriant vegetation of the southern region, yellow, the sun, wealth and soil of the north, and the red signifies the unity of the two regions.Contact us to purchase
