The red-white-red stripes first appeared on the state and war ensign, introduced on 1st January 1787, and was adopted as the national flag in 1918 and as the civil ensign in 1921. During the period of Nazi annexation, a swastika was added, but this was removed in 1945 after Austria's liberation.
The traditional Austrian Eagle is represented on the state and war flags. This ancient symbol of empire was originally two headed, and bore the shields of dependant states on its wings. The present coat of arms also includes a civic crown, a sickle, and a hammer, symbolizing the middle class, farmers and workers respectively. The broken chain refers to the freedom Austria regained in 1945.BUY NOW
