Eastern Samoa has been an American Dependency since 1899. The Kingdom of Samoa and the United States reached an agreement in 1878 when America wanted to check German expansion in the Pacific. The flag has been in use since 1960 and features an American eagle.
The colours are those of the United States flag, the Stars and Stripes. In the eagle's left claw is an orator's "fly-flap" or fue. This is a functional object (used to shoo flies away) which has become the symbol of a "talking chief", one of the ranks of Samoan nobles and a symbol of wisdom. In his right claw is a nifo oti, a Samoan dancing knife. The fact that the eagle holds these objects of Samoan authority and culture indicates the friendship between Samoan and American people.BUY NOW
